Sidemen Valley is east Bali's answer to Ubud — but without the crowds. This serene village sits in a lush river valley framed by Mount Agung, Bali's highest and most sacred volcano. It is one of the most photogenic locations on the island, with rice terraces, traditional weaving villages, and a pace of life that has barely changed in generations.
Things to Do
The rice terraces around Sidemen are among Bali's most beautiful, with Mount Agung as a dramatic backdrop. Walking trails wind through the paddies and neighboring villages where you can observe daily Balinese life. Trekking to Bukit Cinta (Love Hill) rewards with one of the best panoramic views in east Bali.
Traditional Culture
Sidemen is known for its traditional ikat weaving — hand-woven textiles using a centuries-old technique. Visit a family workshop to watch the painstaking process and support local artisans directly. The village temples here are less visited but no less impressive than those in Ubud.
Practical Tips
Sidemen is about a 90-minute drive from Ubud and makes an excellent base for exploring east Bali. Combine with visits to Tirta Gangga water palace, Besakih (the Mother Temple), and the coastal villages of Candidasa and Amed. The village has a growing selection of boutique stays with valley views.
